Louisiana shooting suspect Shamar Elkins, 31, killed 8 children, including 7 of his own, and 2 women, including his spouse, who are receiving treatment for severe wounds.
Elkins' family members stated he had mental health issues and had expressed suicidal thoughts before the horrific killings.
The couple was scheduled to appear in court just hours after the shooting for their separation proceedings.
Elkins' family said he opposed the divorce and was experiencing stress regarding his marriage.
He served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from 2013 to 2020, where he held positions of signal support system specialist and fire support specialist.
US House Speaker Mike Johnson described the shooting as 'heartbreaking' and expressed his condolences to the victims' families and the Shreveport community.
