President Trump has backed down from a threat to wipe out the entirety of Iranian civilization, agreeing to a two-week cease-fire deal with Iran in hopes of finalizing a long-term peace agreement.

The agreement is contingent on Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important energy-shipping lane, and allowing safe passage for ships.

Iran said it had achieved its war aims and signaled its intent to continue control over the strait, with officials indicating they want to make permanent their influence over the waterway.

The U.S. has halted all offensive operations in Iran following Trump's announcement, and negotiations with Iran will start on Friday in Islamabad, Pakistan's capital.

Republicans in Congress praised the president's announcement, but Democrats condemned his war effort and called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked to remove him from office.
