US President Donald Trump delivered a primetime address from the White House, defending recent strikes on Iran's nuclear programme and claiming Iran was 'right at the doorstep' of developing a nuclear weapon.

Trump stated that he had taken action to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, saying 'I did what no other president was willing to do. They made mistakes, and I am correcting them.'

He added that the US had 'totally obliterated' Iran's nuclear sites and that the regime had sought to rebuild its programme in a different location, indicating its intention to pursue nuclear weapons.

Trump also claimed that Iran's military had been severely weakened, stating that its 'navy is gone' and its 'air force is in ruins.'

The address marked Trump's first primetime speech since joining Israel in launching strikes on Iran over a month ago, and aimed to clarify the objectives of the war.
