Kent, who worked under Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, wrote in a public letter that Iran posed no imminent threat to the US and that the war serves no benefit to the American people.
However, Kent's resignation was marred by his claim that the US started the war due to pressure from Israel and its American lobby, and that high-ranking Israeli officials and influential media members deployed a misinformation campaign.
President Trump responded to Kent's resignation, saying it's a good thing he's out, and expressed hope for more such resignations.
