US President Donald Trump has announced a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global oil supplies, after talks with Iran in Pakistan failed to reach an agreement.
Trump claimed Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz was 'world extortion' and vowed to prevent any ships from paying an 'illegal toll' to Iran.
The move comes after two US warships transited the strait as part of a mine clearance operation, and several ships have attempted to pass through the strait only to abort their efforts due to security concerns.
Trump said the US Navy would begin the process of blockading any ships trying to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz, and that the US was ready to 'finish up' Iran at the 'appropriate moment'.
