Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) has revealed that he undertook a 'classified' journey to a secret location in 2016 while in Congress, marking his first admission of participation in a covert foreign mission.
Mullin, who is Trump's pick for Department of Homeland Security leader, stated that the trip was 'official business' and that he was not required to disclose details.
However, he did offer some insights into the training he received for the mission, describing it as 'absolutely awful.'
Mullin's confirmation hearing comes as the Department of Homeland Security remains closed due to a stalemate in Congress over funding for immigration enforcement activities.
The shutdown has resulted in staffing challenges at airports, with TSA officers resigning or taking sick leave without pay.
