The US acting attorney general, Todd Blanche, has confirmed that the gunman who breached the ballroom at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner was targeting members of the Trump administration, including President Donald Trump.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, travelled by train from California to Chicago and then on to Washington, where he checked in as a guest at the Washington Hilton.
Blanche said officials believe Allen had set out to target folks that work in the administration, likely including the President.
Allen will be formally charged in federal court on Monday with assault of a federal officer and discharging a firearm in an attempt to kill a federal officer.
Trump was escorted away from the venue by Secret Service members after a commotion broke out, and several attendees were seen crouching down during the chaos.
Trump later said in a Truth Social post that the shooter had been apprehended and praised the Secret Service and Law Enforcement for their bravery.
