US President Donald Trump has escalated pressure on Congress by demanding the passage of the Save America Act, a controversial elections bill that has already cleared the House of Representatives but faces a difficult path in the Senate.
The bill, backed by many Republicans, aims to overhaul voter registration requirements for federal elections by requiring individuals to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship and stricter voter identification rules.
Trump has said he would refuse to sign other legislation until Congress passes the measure, describing it as essential and that it “supersedes everything else.”
The bill has been met with fierce opposition from Democrats, who have vowed to block it, and its future remains uncertain as it must still pass the US Senate, where most legislation requires 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.
