The United Nations Human Rights Council has proposed Palestinian academic Zeina Jallad for a role investigating the human-rights risks of economic sanctions, sparking concerns about her impartiality.
Jallad, who is sympathetic to authoritarian regimes, has been critical of the U.S., Europe, and Israel, and has accused Western sanctions of causing civilian suffering under the Assad regime in Syria.
Her appointment has been met with criticism from human rights groups, who fear that she will take a biased approach to her role, particularly when investigating sanctions against Iran.
The Human Rights Council has a history of approving candidates by consensus, but any of its 47 member states can force a vote on Jallad's appointment before the Council's 61st Session ends on Monday.
