The UK has finally commemorated the names of 33,000 Indian Army soldiers who died in the First World War but were missing from a memorial in Iraq.

The digital memorial, launched earlier this month, includes the names of Indian soldiers alongside over 46,000 Commonwealth service personnel.

The Basra Memorial in Iraq was previously incomplete due to the historical omission of Indian names, with soldiers dying in the tens of thousands during the Mesopotamia Campaign.

A digital option was chosen due to safety concerns in Iraq, and the launch of the panels marks an important moment for the Commission and the commemoration of the Indian Army's dead of the Mesopotamia Campaign.

The Commonwealth War Grave Commission is working to address historical inequalities in commemoration, with digital memorials designed to complement physical sites and raise awareness of cemeteries and memorials worldwide.
