A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the religiously aggravated rape of a Sikh woman in the UK's Walsall.

John Ashby, who had initially denied charges, pleaded guilty to the crimes and was described by the judge as a 'deeply unpleasant racist and Islamophobe.'

The victim, in her 20s, was followed from a bus stop to her home and subjected to a tirade of anti-Muslim abuse before being attacked.

The court heard how the victim's life was 'drastically changed' by the attack and that she 'finally felt free' after her attacker pleaded guilty.

Ashby was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 14 years before he can be considered for parole.
