A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the religiously aggravated rape of a Sikh woman in the UK.
John Ashby, a British man, initially denied charges of sexual assault, strangulation, racially aggravated actual bodily harm, and robbery before admitting the crimes.
The judge described Ashby as a 'deeply unpleasant racist and Islamophobe' and said he posed an extreme danger to women.
The court heard that Ashby followed the victim from a bus stop to her home, subjecting her to a tirade of anti-Muslim abuse and prolonged violence.
The victim, who has protected anonymity, revealed in an impact statement how the attack had drastically changed her life and left her feeling lost.
Ashby was jailed for life with a minimum term of 14 years before he can be considered for parole.
