An A-10 Warthog fighter jet crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, at about the same time an Air Force F-15E was shot down over Iran, The New York Times reported.

The lone pilot in the A-10 incident was rescued, while the US military launched a massive search operation for one of the two members on the F-15 that went down in Iran.

US officials have not confirmed reports that Iran's military shot down a US F-15E Strike Eagle, but Iranian state media claimed responsibility for the downing.

The rescue of the A-10 pilot occurred as the US military was conducting a search and rescue operation, AP reported.

Iranian media also reported that multiple American assets, including helicopters and C-130 Hercules aircraft, were deployed to locate the missing crew member, but some withdrew after coming under fire from Iranian air defenses.
