The US State Department has described the first high-level meeting between Israel and Lebanon in decades as 'productive'.

The meeting, which involved US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors, aimed to launch direct negotiations between the two nations.

According to a statement from the State Department, all sides agreed to launch direct negotiations at a mutually agreed time and venue.

The talks also touched on a long-term vision, including clearly defined borders.

Israel's ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, stated that the two nations are 'on the same side' in liberating Lebanon from Iranian influence.

However, tensions in the region remain high, with the US military enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports and Iran threatening to strike targets across the region.
