The United States may increase its annual refugee admissions, currently at a historic low of 7,500, a State Department official said.

The move comes after US President Donald Trump drastically cut the number of refugees for fiscal year 2026 from 125,000, with most recent admissions being white farmers from South Africa.

The US approved their applications citing risks of death and discrimination, claims refuted by Pretoria.

Assistant Secretary of State Andrew Veprek said the administration is 'looking at the pace of resettlement' and considering changes for the next fiscal year.

Veprek declined to confirm whether the quota might be expanded to other nationalities or ethnic groups.

The US has shifted refugee resettlement responsibility to the Department of Health and Human Services in January.
