After six weeks of war, the US and Iran are set to hold talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, with thousands of lives lost and global energy markets disrupted.

The talks, facilitated by Pakistan, are expected to centre around a 15-point proposal sent by the US to Iran, which Tehran has responded to with a 10-point counterproposal.

US Vice President JD Vance will lead the American delegation, joined by special envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner, while Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi and parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf will represent Iran.

The agenda includes key US demands such as Iran surrendering its enriched uranium stockpile and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran seeks control over the strait, an end to regional military operations, and the lifting of all sanctions.

Pakistan maintains strong diplomatic ties with both the US and Iran, and has been designated a Major Non-NATO Ally of the US since 2004.
