US Representative Eric Swalwell has announced his resignation from the US Congress amid allegations of sexual misconduct from four former staff members.
Swalwell, a Democrat from California, canceled his 2028 campaign for governor on Sunday and confirmed his resignation on Monday.
He has been under scrutiny from lawmakers from both parties, with the bipartisan House Ethics Committee launching an investigation into the allegations.
Some lawmakers, including Republican Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee, have made extreme comments about the case, suggesting that rapists should be hanged.
Swalwell has denied the allegations, calling them false, and has stated that he will fight them.
He has also taken responsibility for 'mistakes in judgment' and has apologized to his family, staff, and constituents.
The allegations against Swalwell include rape and harassment claims from 2019 and 2024, with four women accusing him of unwanted advances, explicit messages, and non-consensual touching.
