The United States has designated Afghanistan as a 'State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention' due to the Taliban's use of 'terrorist tactics' to kidnap American citizens.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused the Taliban of using kidnapping for ransom or policy concessions, calling it 'despicable.'
The designation comes after Rubio's statement on X, where he said it's not safe for Americans to travel to Afghanistan due to the unjust detention of US citizens.
The US has called for the release of detained Americans, including Dennis Coyle and Mahmoud Habibi, and an end to 'hostage diplomacy.'
Afghanistan is the second country to receive this designation, following Iran on February 27.
