A Honduran family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the US government over the 2023 death of their 8-year-old daughter, Anadith Danay Reyes Alvarez, who had a heart condition and died in custody after crossing the border.

An internal investigation found failures in providing proper medical care, including a failure to review documents describing the girl's sensitive condition.

Despite pleas from her mother, Anadith was not taken to a hospital until her body went limp in her mother's arms.

The family is seeking damages but does not request a specific monetary amount.

The lawsuit follows a tort claim made against the government last year, which was denied.
