Senior American officials, led by Vice President JD Vance, will push for the release of at least six US citizens held in Iranian custody during peace talks in Islamabad.
The US will request the release of the Americans, including Kamran Hekmati, a Jewish Iranian-American, Reza Valizadeh, a journalist, and Shahab Dalili, a Green Card holder.
The US State Department has formally designated Hekmati and Valizadeh as "wrongfully detained" and has raised concerns about their treatment in prison.
Valizadeh, a journalist with US government-funded channel Radio Farda, is serving a 10-year sentence in Evin Prison, while Hekmati is accused of having met with Israeli spies from the Mossad abroad.
Dalili, a Green Card holder, has been in Evin Prison since 2016 and has been left out of every prisoner swap the US has negotiated with Iran.
The US hopes that Iran's recent release of two French citizens convicted on espionage charges will serve as a precedent for the release of the American detainees.
