Artemis II's success masked an uneasy truth: the US is trailing China in the lunar space race. Despite its achievements, the mission was plagued by technical issues and delays, pushing back the next manned lunar landing to 2028 at the earliest.

China, on the other hand, is making steady progress, conducting successful in-flight abort tests and demonstrating advanced landing technology. Its lunar program is achieving significant leaps in the technologies that matter, including building the robotic infrastructure needed for a permanent lunar base.

To stay ahead, the US must shift its priorities from spectacle to permanence, focusing on building infrastructure and establishing a unified lunar strategy. The government also needs to sell the lunar project to the American people more effectively, highlighting its potential for power, prosperity, and security.

As NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman warned, 'This is not the time for delay, but for action, because if we fall behind, if we make a mistake, we may never catch up.'
