CBS News has fired veteran '60 Minutes' correspondent Scott Pelley following a meeting with management in response to his criticism of the news magazine's new leadership.
According to a letter from newly appointed '60 Minutes' executive producer Nick Bilton, Pelley's employment was terminated for cause effective immediately.
The decision comes after Pelley questioned and criticized Bilton and editor in chief Bari Weiss in a staff-wide meeting, accusing them of trying to 'kill' the newsmagazine and objecting to Bilton's hiring.
Pelley had reportedly refused to meet with Bilton and Weiss privately to discuss last Thursday's shake-up at '60 Minutes,' which included the firings of top producers and two correspondents.
Bilton wrote to '60 Minutes' staffers that he made repeated attempts to have direct conversations with Pelley over the weekend, but that was not the path Scott chose.
