Fourteen people have been arrested in Varanasi for allegedly hosting an Iftar meal on a boat in the Ganga River, consuming biryani and throwing its leftovers into the water. The action was taken after a video went viral showing the incident.

The accused were booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, following a complaint by the BJP Yuva Morcha's city unit chief Rajat Jaiswal.

Jaiswal alleged that the act was done with the intention of hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus, who consider the Ganga River a sacred place of worship.
