New Delhi: Thirty-two Indian nationals have died while serving with the Russian military on the frontlines of the conflict in Ukraine, with efforts underway to secure the release of 35 more, sources said.

The recruitment of Indians in Russia's armed forces remains a contentious issue in relations between New Delhi and Moscow.

Indian citizens continue to be lured by agents into serving with the Russian military, often on the promise of lucrative salaries and bonuses, or even citizenship.

Since December 2025, the number of Indians killed has risen to 32, while 12 are reported missing.

There are reports of 214 Indians being recruited into the Russian military, with 135 having been discharged and released.

The Indian side is pursuing 35 'active cases' to secure the release of Indians serving in the Russian military.

Additionally, some Indian workers in Russia are being lured into jobs in the Russian military by agents.

The bodies of several Indians killed while serving with the Russian military have been brought back to the country in recent days.
