The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is planning to approach the Rajya Sabha chairman and President Droupadi Murmu, seeking action against seven of its MPs who quit the party and joined the BJP.

AAP leaders said the move is to blunt the jolt from the sudden departures, which came less than a year before assembly elections in Punjab.

Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh said he will write to the Rajya Sabha chairman to seek the disqualification of the seven rebel lawmakers.

The party is also looking to escalate the matter at the constitutional level, with Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann seeking an appointment with the President to demand the "recall" of the defectors.

However, the Constitution does not have a provision for recall, and experts say the merger is unconstitutional unless the party itself decides to merge.
