The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to deploy AI-based dashcam systems on 40,000 km of national highways to enhance road safety and maintenance.
The initiative involves installing specialized dashboard cameras on route patrol vehicles, which will conduct weekly surveys of highway stretches.
The focus will be on pavement conditions, including potholes, cracks, and surface damage, as well as issues like faded lane markings, damaged crash barriers, and non-functional streetlights.
The system will also flag other safety concerns, such as illegal median openings, unauthorized signboards, encroachments, and illegal parking.
At least one night survey will be conducted every month to check visibility and performance of signages, road markings, reflectors, and lighting.
The system will track maintenance issues like waterlogging, missing drainage covers, vegetation growth, and bus bay conditions.
The highway network has been divided into five zones, with a dedicated platform to collect and analyze data, helping authorities identify problems and fix them faster.
