A Vancouver-bound Air India flight was forced to return to Delhi after flying for over seven hours due to an operational issue.
The Boeing 777 200LR aircraft, which was not approved for operations to Canada, turned back while flying over Chinese airspace after being airborne for roughly four hours.
The flight, AI185, departed for Vancouver on Friday morning after passengers were accommodated overnight.
An alleged lapse in updating operational requirements led to the wrong aircraft being assigned to the flight, officials said.
The airline's ground teams provided assistance, including hotel accommodation, while efforts were made to fly passengers to their destination at the earliest.
