Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has announced plans to transform the Polavaram major irrigation project into a major tourist destination. The project, located on the Godavari River, will feature hotels, shopping areas, and other amenities, including boating facilities and water sports.
The chief minister directed officials to accelerate construction to ensure the project's completion by the time of the upcoming Godavari Pushkaralu, a once-in-12 years spiritual congregation of pilgrims.
According to officials, significant progress has been made on various components of the project, including the Earth-cum-Rock Fill (ECRF) dam, twin tunnels, and approach channel earthwork works.
With regard to rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) of project evacuees, officials informed the chief minister that 26 out of 95 planned R&R colonies have been completed, with 49 more expected to be ready by September this year.
