The Andhra Pradesh government is considering a ban on private sleeper buses following a recent spate of serious accidents involving such vehicles.
State transport minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy said the government is examining the possibility of banning non-factory-built sleeper buses and will seek regulatory intervention from the Centre.
Reddy added that the government will not hesitate to take stringent action to save lives and has rolled out a series of stringent safety measures, including regulation of travel time based on distance, mandatory staffing of buses with two drivers, and installation of speed guns on roads.
The government has also directed private bus operators to install two cameras in every bus to monitor the alertness of drivers and assess the movement of vehicles coming from the opposite direction.
