A horrific incident in Assam's Karbi Anglong district has left authorities shaken. On December 30, 2025, a couple was beaten and set on fire by villagers in Beloguri Munda village, accused of practising witchcraft. The victims died in the brutal attack, which has sparked outrage. Eighteen people, including four women, have been arrested in connection with the crime. According to police, the villagers had been spreading rumors that the couple was causing illnesses and misfortunes in the area. Senior superintendent of police Pushpraj Singh led the investigation, which has now led to the arrest of the accused. The police have invoked the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Act, classifying witch-hunting as a cognisable and non-bailable offence. The incident highlights the persistence of deep-rooted superstition in rural Assam, despite stringent laws.
