A suspected dacoit, who allegedly headed a dacoity racket operating across Assam, was killed in a police encounter in Nagaon district. The deceased, identified as Khairul Ali alias Moni, was involved in multiple dacoities across the state, including one at a doctor's residence in Nagaon district, where his wife died.
Police said an exchange of fire occurred between a group of suspected dacoits and police in the Rangalu area of the district around 2.30am. A 7.65mm pistol, two empty cartridges and several sharp weapons were recovered from the encounter site.
The operation led by the additional superintendent of police resulted in two gang members being injured while the remaining fled. Police believe there were more individuals involved, but most of them managed to escape.
Khairul Ali was the prime suspect in the case of a doctor's wife who succumbed to her injuries after being attacked by dacoits in April. A case was registered against him and five others under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
