Assam's Karbi Anglong district has been gripped by violence and protests, prompting authorities to suspend internet services in the area. At least eight people were injured in clashes between two groups of protesters, prompting the police to resort to force to disperse the crowd. The violence is linked to an eviction drive in the region, with multiple groups clashing over the issue. Despite prohibitory orders in place, large numbers of people, including women and children, took to the streets to protest the violence. To restore peace, authorities have held talks with community leaders and urged people to raise their grievances through legal channels. Heavy security has been deployed in the area, with Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) imposed to maintain public order. The prohibitory order, issued by the Karbi Anglong District Magistrate, restricts the assembly of five or more people, imposes movement restrictions between 5:00 pm and 6:00 am, and bans rallies, picketing, and inflammatory speeches or writings. The suspension of internet services is expected to remain in place until further orders. A senior Assam Police official, Akhilesh Kumar Singh, said that authorities are working to resolve the situation peacefully. 'One side has been vacated, and the other side will be vacated soon,' he said. 'We urge people to raise their grievances through legal channels and refrain from taking the law into their hands.'
