Normalcy is slowly returning to West Karbi Anglong district in Assam, where a spate of violence left two people dead and several injured earlier this week. The situation remains tense, with prohibitory orders, night curfews, and suspended mobile internet services in place. However, authorities have reported no fresh incidents of violence over the past couple of days. The deployment of the army, Rapid Action Force, and CRPF has helped maintain a strict security vigil in the affected areas. The worst-hit Kheroni region, home to various communities, including Karbis, Biharis, Bengalis, and Nepalis, has been at the center of the conflict. Tensions have been running high between the indigenous Karbi community and Hindi-speaking settlers over alleged land encroachment. A crucial tripartite meeting is scheduled to take place in Guwahati on Friday, bringing together the state government, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, and representatives from the Karbi community. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and KAAC chief Tuliram Ronghang are set to attend the meeting, aimed at resolving the long-standing issue. The Karbi community has been demanding the eviction of alleged illegal settlers from Village Grazing Reserve and Professional Grazing Reserve lands in the districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong. The situation escalated on Tuesday, with one person killed in police firing and another burned alive inside his house, leaving over 70 people, including 60 police personnel, injured. Chief Minister Sarma has stated that the demand to evict Hindi-speaking encroachers cannot be met immediately due to a stay by the Gauhati High Court. The meeting on Friday is seen as a crucial step towards resolving the conflict and restoring peace in the region.
