The Kannada theatre and cinema scene has been deeply influenced by the works of William Shakespeare, with adaptations dating back to 1871. From period dramas to mythological tales, Shakespeare's plays have been reimagined in various Indian languages, including Kannada.
One of the earliest adaptations was Nagadavarannu Nagisuva Kathe, a take on The Comedy of Errors, while A Anandarao's Ramavarma Leelavathi Charitre was an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. 20th century stalwarts of Kannada literature continued to engage with Shakespeare, with Kuvempu's feminist adaptation of Hamlet, Raktakshi, and DV Gundappa's translation of Macbeth.
More recent adaptations include Maari Kadu, an environment-focused adaptation of Macbeth, and Venissina Vyapara, a translation of The Merchant of Venice. Kannada cinema has also been enamoured of the Bard, with notable adaptations including Bahaddur Gandu and Nanjundi Kalyana.
