Canadian-American investor Chamath Palihapitiya called billionaire rankings, net worth charts, and follower counts an 'illusion'.

Speaking on the People by WTF podcast, Palihapitiya said he works on two internal systems: a hyper-rational and competitive one, and a detached and questioning one.

Palihapitiya, a former senior Facebook executive, said these metrics may feel urgent but fade quickly over time.

He acknowledged that money's emotional utility changes once acquired, and that he felt detached during a liquidity event in which billions were wired into his account.

Palihapitiya described looking at the number and immediately thinking about what came next, saying he didn't feel anything.
