Haryana's Rajya Sabha election concluded with the Congress and BJP winning one seat each in a cliffhanger that ended past midnight. Sanjay Bhatia of the BJP and Karamvir Singh Boudh of the Congress were declared winners by the returning officer.
The final tally revealed a close shave for the opposition as Boudh polled 28 votes and Nandal 16 votes. In the 90-member House, 88 votes were polled after two INLD MLAs abstained. Returning officer Pankaj Agrawal declared five ballots invalid, four from the Congress and one from the BJP.
According to the formula devised for Rajya Sabha polls, the quota required to win one seat was 2767. BJP candidate Sanjay Bhatia got 39 first preference votes, exceeding the quota required for his victory. The surplus votes of Bhatia's vote were 1133, which were transferred to BJP-backed Independent Satish Nandal. However, the value of Nandal's votes (2733) was less than that of Congress candidate Karamvir Singh Boudh (2800), securing Boudh's election.
