Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest 89 out of the 126 seats in the upcoming state assembly elections. The party will leave 26 seats for its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and 11 seats for the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF).
The BJP's list of candidates will be announced after the party's parliamentary board meeting on March 18. The AGP is also expected to announce its candidates on Wednesday.
Voting for all 126 seats in Assam will take place on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4. The Congress has already named its candidates for 65 seats and set aside 15 seats for its alliance partners.
