The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has condemned the alleged medical negligence that led to the death of an Indian-origin man in Canada, calling on the Canadian government to take responsibility. Prashant Sreekumar, a 44-year-old accountant and father of three, died of suspected cardiac arrest after an eight-hour wait for treatment at Grey Nuns Hospital in Edmonton. Sreekumar had complained of severe chest pains while at work on December 22, but medical staff initially dismissed his concerns, leaving him to wait for over eight hours before being called into the treatment area. His father, Kumar Sreekumar, described the harrowing scene, saying his son told him he was in 'excruciating pain' before collapsing and passing away. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed condolences for Sreekumar's death, stating that the Canadian government should take responsibility for the incident. 'The person is of Indian origin, but he happens to be a Canadian national. So, obviously the government of Canada should take responsibility in this particular matter,' Jaiswal said. Separately, the MEA also expressed condolences for the death of Shivank Avasthi, an Indian doctoral student who was shot dead near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus in Canada. The Canadian authorities are treating the case as a homicide and are in touch with the victim's family. The Indian Consulate is providing assistance to the family in this difficult time.
