A parliamentary panel has flagged a 14.90% shortage of officers in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and recommended the creation of a reserve panel to fill vacancies.
The 160th report of the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice noted that the CBI currently has an in-position strength of 6,212 personnel, leaving a shortfall of 1,088 posts against a sanctioned strength of 7,300.
The committee attributed the vacancies to the agency not receiving sufficient and suitable nominations of officers from state police forces and candidates recommended by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and Staff Selection Commission (SSC) not ultimately joining the organisation.
The panel also recommended a detailed root cause analysis to examine the reasons for attrition in the sub-inspector cadre, which has a high attrition rate.
