The Union petroleum ministry has clarified that biometric Aadhaar authentication for electronic know your customer (e-KYC) beneficiaries is only needed for “unauthenticated” LPG customers.

According to the ministry, e-KYC is mandatory for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries to get a deposit-free LPG connection, but not for non-PMUY customers who have already done e-KYC.

The ministry clarified that PMUY customers need to do e-KYC “only once every financial year” for receiving targeted direct benefit transfer (DBT) subsidies after seven refills.

e-KYC can be done easily sitting at home, free of cost, and does not affect the supply of refills. It ensures transparency, establishes clear eligibility, weeds out ghost consumers, and discourages diversion of LPG.
