Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has called for a structured national framework to utilize the experience of retired judges in alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
The CJI emphasized that the experience of former judges is a valuable national resource that should not go untapped after retirement.
He suggested creating a National Registry of Former Judges willing to serve in ADR and legal awareness capacities, and Memoranda of Understanding between this association, state legal services authorities, and the high courts.
Retired judges can contribute as mediators and arbitrators, legal educators, pre-litigation counsellors, and institution builders, said the CJI.
Highlighting the potential roles, he said they can act as mediators and arbitrators, particularly in commercial and family matters, legal educators, pre-litigation counsellors, and institution builders.
The CJI also emphasized the importance of preserving the public trust in the judiciary and its allied institutions.
