Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge expressed regret over his controversial remarks about Gujaratis being 'illiterate', which sparked a political row after he made them at a rally in Kerala.

In an X post, Kharge said his remarks were 'deliberately misinterpreted' and that he still expresses regret, adding that he has 'always had and will continue to have the highest of respect' for the people of Gujarat.

The BJP had sought Kharge's apology after he allegedly called Gujaratis 'illiterate' during the rally, and senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned Kharge's role as Congress president, wondering if he had 'abandoned all sense of dignity'.

Kharge's comments also drew ire from the BJP over his remarks on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP, which he allegedly made at an election rally in Assam, saying that they were a 'poisonous snake'.
