The Congress has expressed concern over the proposed delimitation exercise tied to amendments to the Women's Reservation Act, warning of 'grave consequences'. Party chief Mallikarjun Kharge said the delimitation exercise requires thorough deliberation, and the party will formulate a collective strategy with opposition parties.
Kharge accused the government of convening Parliament to secure a political advantage and pass the Constitutional Amendment Bill in haste. The Congress is in a bind, as it had demanded early implementation of the women reservation act.
Leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Sachin Pilot, and Mukul Wasnik advocated supporting the amendments to the women reservation bill. However, others were wary of the proposed delimitation exercise, which could widen the gap between south and north Indian states.
The Centre will resume the budget session on April 16, with two bills indicated: to amend the women reservation act and set up a delimitation commission.
