A Delhi court has convicted Madhya Pradesh Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti in a case related to cheating and forgery of bank records.
Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh of the Rouse Avenue Court found Bharti and former cashier Raghuvir Prajapati guilty of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and forgery.
The case, registered in 2015 in Madhya Pradesh's Datiya, was transferred to Delhi by the Supreme Court last year after claims of witness intimidation.
In a 95-page judgment, the court said Bharti and Prajapati conspired to cheat the complainant bank by drawing interest at a higher rate and forged bank documents.
The prosecution argued that Bharti's late mother deposited ₹10 lakh in the bank in 1998, and the accused conspired to extend high-interest payments indefinitely by tampering with bank records.
The court dismissed the defence's argument that the accused were immune from prosecution and will hear arguments on the quantum of sentence on Thursday.
