The Congress has indicated that it might back amendments to the women's reservation bill, but with a condition: the government should delay the session until after the ongoing assembly elections.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that the party welcomes the amendment but believes the government should have waited 15 more days to consult all opposition parties and convene the session afterwards.
The government wants to delink the bill from the ongoing census and roll out the law from 2029 Lok Sabha polls, which the Congress sees as an attempt to take advantage in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal elections.
Ramesh added that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will call a meeting next week of Congress lawmakers and Opposition leaders to chalk out a strategy.
The proposed delimitation might be based on a 50% proportionate increase in the number of seats in all states, which the Congress finds unacceptable as it would disadvantage southern, eastern, and north eastern states.
