The Delhi high court has ordered the removal of all allegedly defamatory content linking Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri's daughter, Himayani Puri, to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The court directed defendants to take down the content within 24 hours and blocked material uploaded outside India from being accessed within the country.
The court also issued summons in Himayani's defamation suit and fixed August 7 as the next date of hearing.
Himayani's counsel argued that their client had been subjected to a 'scurrilous attack' driven by sources solely because she is the daughter of a cabinet minister.
Counsel for social media intermediaries opposed the request for a global takedown, arguing that the question of whether Indian courts have jurisdiction to direct social media intermediaries to remove content worldwide is currently pending.
The court ordered the removal of content uploaded from IP addresses in India, but declined to order an immediate global takedown.
