The Delhi high court has issued a notice to the Centre over petitions challenging key provisions of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026.
A bench of chief justice D K Upadhyaya and justice Tejas Karia sought the Centre's response in two petitions and fixed July 22 as the next date of hearing.
The amendment, which was passed by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, reintroduces state control over gender identity through mechanisms of verification and certification.
Advocate Chandresh Jain and working professional Lakshay Jain have filed the petitions, arguing that the amendment violates the rights to dignity, privacy, and decisional autonomy under Article 21.
The petitioners also argued that the introduction of medical boards and biological criteria is 'intrusive' and 'violative of bodily integrity'.
