The Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has slammed the opposition's move to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla from the post, calling it 'ill-conceived'.
Gupta, in a letter to Birla, said the neutrality of the Chair of the House is central to the parliamentary democracy of the country and urged members to respect constitutional institutions.
The resolution brought by opposition parties seeking Birla's removal was defeated by a voice vote last Wednesday.
Gupta appreciated Lok Sabha MPs who opposed the 'ill-conceived' effort, saying it risks undermining the spirit of parliamentary functioning if driven by 'narrow political motivations'.
Under Birla's stewardship, the Lok Sabha has continued to function with balance and dignity, enabling meaningful democratic debate while maintaining discipline and decorum.
