The Election Commission of India has issued a show cause notice to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge over his remark calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a 'terrorist' during a press conference in Chennai.
Kharge made the comment a day before the Tamil Nadu elections, which he later defended, saying he meant the PM was 'terrorising' the democratic fabric of the country.
The ECI notice stated that Kharge prima facie violated the model code of conduct and gave him 24 hours to explain his stand.
A high-level BJP delegation met the ECI, demanding strict action and a public apology from Kharge, while the Congress accused the BJP of amplifying the issue to divert attention.
