The Election Commission of India has issued a show cause notice to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge over his 'terrorist' remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The poll body took serious note of Kharge's comment, calling it 'intemperate and highly objectionable' and 'dehumanising.'

Kharge had referred to Modi as a 'terrorist' while criticising the AIADMK for aligning with the BJP. He later clarified that he meant Modi 'always terrorises' people and parties.

The BJP had demanded 'strictest action' against Kharge over the remark, calling it an 'insult' not only to Modi but to 1.4 billion Indians.
